Having thoroughly beaten the campaign and gotten all of the achievements not related to making custom maps, I can comfortably say Kaiju Wars is a great tactical strategy game. Don’t be mistaken; this is NOT Into the Breach, XCOM, or any other hero-based tactical game. You have only regular army units (and the occasional sci-fi superweapon) at your disposal. Units WILL be crushed, cities WILL be wrecked, and the game is about getting your units stepped on and cities wrecked in such a way as to slow down the monsters and chip away their health, bit by bit.
Killing the monsters usually isn’t the goal, though – you need to produce Science, which can be done in a variety of ways to allow for different strategies and some creative missions. In general, the missions aren’t super difficult, but optional objectives, hard modes, and freeplay modes create more challenge if you want it. On top of this, the artstyle is pretty cool and definitely distinctive, and the writing and characters are fun, if nothing earth-shatteringly creative.
