Mechanical Ascension X is an experimental title that is rough around the edges. There’s clearly some ambition with the direction the game was going. But a lack of polish and vision ultimately hinder the experience. Though I found some joy in the mindless, bland gameplay, it’s not something I’d be eager to return to. Past the core combat, the RPG system provides a progression system that delivered able incentives for getting through the game. Overall, Mechanical Scrollery is not a title I’d recommend. As there are plenty of more polished and creative Touhou fangames out there. Key mapping was added and finally it’s a playable game. But being playable is really just a starting point and it’s still far away from a game that I can recommend to people who don’t own a controller.
There has been many, many indie action games that work with both keyboard and controller while both have fantastic experiences, and I couldn’t find a real reason to recommend a game that still struggles with controls in mid 2020. The game simply wasn’t designed for keyboard/mouse controls and now it just feels like a terrible console port (which, not surprisingly, happens a lot with Japanese games) while there isn’t even a console version to start with. If you ever managed to get your game on PS4 with everything patched up I’ll buy the game again, but I’m not going to mess it on PC any longer.
